Work

Managing Work

Work is an activity, such as a job, that a person uses physical or mental effort in order to achieve a purpose or a result. Whilst it typically implies paid employment, it can also encompass unpaid activities such as volunteering, being a carer, work experience and domestic /parenting work within the home.

Benefits of Work

Work has the potential to be very beneficial to wellbeing in multiple ways:

  • It can, through successful achievement of work responsibilities, increase our self-esteem and sense of self-efficacy.
  • It can provide a sense of meaning and purpose.
  • If it aligns with pre-existing values and sense of purpose it can increase life satisfaction.
  • Provides connections that can enrich our lives.
  • Can facilitate a sense of belonging and appreciation.
  • Can provide opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others by work outcomes, mentoring and contribution to culture.
  • Provides opportunities for personal and professional growth and development.
  • Provides economic benefit.

Strategies to Improve Managing Work

1. Reflect.

List 3 things that you appreciate about your job and 3 things you value about your workplace. How does your work link in with your sense of meaning and purpose?

2. Become a mentor to others at work.

As you become more senior in your organisation, you will have valuable insights on many aspects to do with work and work/life balance. You can share these in a formal mentoring relationship or through informal on-the-job interactions. Not only is that helpful for the recipients but also adds to your own job satisfaction.

3. Professional development.

Engaging in ongoing professional development means that we maintain and grow the skills we need to optimally perform our roles. Not only does that support our performance, but can also reduce role-related stress/anxiety and increase self-efficacy and personal satisfaction. If your employer does not provide in house professional development, look for courses and workshops run by your professional group or university Business Schools.

4. Make friends at work.

Having friends at work leads to job engagement and satisfaction. Research shows that those who have friendships at work are happier and in better health, as well as being more willing to help out the team.
